Traditional braces are an excellent choice when the movements required to achieve straight teeth are more complex in nature. With more difficult movements of teeth – straighteneing can occur more quickly and predictably with traditional Orthodontic Braces.
Another excellent situation for traditional Braces is when the person wearing removable clear aligners is unlikely to wear them for the required number of hours a day. If this is the case then Orthdontic Braces that don’t come off are sometimes a better option.
Treatment with Braces typically takes from 12 months to two years or more – depending on the problems looking to be solved, and visits to the dentist are needed every month or so to monitor treatment progress and adjust the braces.

Types of braces
Metal braces
Metal braces remain the standard treatment for straightening teeth. They’re the least costly type of braces, and thanks to advances in technology, are now more comfortable and less conspicuous.
Ceramic braces
Ceramic braces are more discreet than metal braces because they have tooth-coloured or clear brackets. They work faster than plastic aligners but can be prone to staining, without proper care.
How do braces straighten teeth?
Braces have three components that work together to straighten teeth.
- Brackets – small metal squares that are bonded to each tooth.
- Archwire connects brackets together – one wire along the upper row of teeth and one across the lower teeth. It’s the gentle pressure of the archwire that repositions teeth.
- Rubber bands of braces – also known as modules, ligatures or ormalasts – attach the archwire onto each bracket.

Are metal braces more effective than clear aligners?
Metal braces tend to be more effective at adjusting teeth that have severe overcrowding. Metal braces may also cost less than aligners. And, since they’re fastened to your teeth, you don’t have to worry about misplacing or losing them.
Who can have this treatment?
Braces are usually recommended to begin around the age of 11-12. However, many older teens and adults are also suitable candidates for braces as long as you have healthy teeth and gums, you can enjoy straighter teeth. In fact, there’s no age limit to having your teeth straightened.
Is Invisalign treatment actually faster vs traditional braces
In short, the answer is yes. While traditional metal braces require somewhere between 18 and 24 months, the average length of treatment with Invisalign is 12 months. However, the time needed to deliver the results you desire largely depends on how complex the treatment plan is.*
Can braces ruin my teeth?
Braces and Invisalign do not cause teeth to become weaker, looser, or fall out in healthy people. Braces can be a good option for those with poor periodontal health.
