TMD (temporomandibular disorder) is becoming more and more common and we receive referrals from a number of clinics on the Sunshine Coast for management of TMD.
We work with Physiotherapists, Sleep Physicians, ENT’s and Head and Neck surgeons when necessary to help provide relief of this painful condition.
TMD commonly occurs in two main ways:
- Muscle pain which is the most common form and can cause mild and severe pain and headaches, and
- Jaw Joint pain- due to problems in the joint capsule, disk and jaw joint bones.
What is TMD?
The temporomandibular joint does a lot of work in enabling the upper jaw to close on the lower jaw. Problems arise when the jaw joints stop working properly with jaw muscles.
Medical professionals regard TMD as a group of symptoms that occur together, as opposed to a single condition, and it’s thought to be caused by multiple factors.

TMD treatments
TMJ pain relief at Yandina Dental can alleviate the symptoms of TMJ disorders significantly.
A common method of treating TMD is with a customised oral appliance like a bite guard or dental splint to prevent upper and lower teeth grinding together.
Injections – also used for anti-wrinkle treatment – can ease TMJ discomfort as well by relaxing jaw muscles.
Other measures to help alleviate TMJ pain may include:
- Tooth extraction
- Orthodontic treatment – braces or Invisalign aligners – to straighten teeth
- Attaching dental crowns or veneers onto teeth
We may also recommend:
- Myofunctional therapy to resolve issues with facial muscles
- Over-the-counter medication such as aspirin or another anti-inflammatory drug
- Prescription medication such as muscle relaxants, nerve pain drugs, or injectable steroids
- Relaxation techniques to help reduce jaw tension
- Physiotherapy to strengthen jaw muscles and improve flexibility and range of motion.
- Cognitive behavioural therapy – a form of talking therapy often used to ease anxiety
Symptoms of TMJ disorder
The most common symptom of TMD is pain, which may be mistaken for other problems. TMJ issues can cause:
- Muscle pain in the face, neck or shoulders.
- Muscle spasms in the jaw.
- Discomfort when eating.
- Toothache-type pain.
- Pain when yawning.
- Headaches
- Earache
Other signs of a TMJ problem include:
- Blurred vision
- Tinnitus – ringing in the ears
- Facial swelling
- Dizziness
- Locking of the jaw joint.
- Clicking sounds or a grating sensation
- Popping sounds in your ears
